Facebook said to launch 'Music Dashboard' with Spotify, others

Facebook‘s next big business could have Mark Zuckerberg singing — and Apple‘s Steve Jobs biting his nails. According to a report by GigaOm, Facebook plans to partner with music streaming service Spotify, as well as other music services and applications, to launch a new social music platform that will allow users to listen to music directly through Facebook, and check out what music their friends are listening to, in real time.

Dubbed “Music Dashboard,” the new service will reportedly be accessed through a new Music tab in the left-hand column of users’ Facebook homepage. The tab will only appear “if a user has listened to music with one of Facebook’s partner music services,” says GigaOm founder Om Malik. Clicking the tab will open the Music Dashboard page. There, users can see all the tracks they’ve listened to, as well as top tracks and the number of times each track has played.

A “Persistent Playback/Pause Button” will be instituted at the bottom of the Facebook page “where you currently have the chat icon,” says Malik. The button will serve as a controller for playing music, as well as a “quick snapshot” that will let users see what song is playing on any music streaming service they are logged into using Facebook Connect. It will also enable users to pause or play the music directly from their Facebook page.

Malik’s sources tell him Music Dashboard will also include these features:

1. Music Notifications: here you have notifications that show if your friends have listened to songs recommended by you or on your profile.
2. Recommended Songs: You can get a list of songs heard and recommended by your friends. You can also play them back by clicking the play icon.
3. Top Songs from friends.
4. Top Albums from friends, with cover art.
5. Recent listens from your friends.
6. In the upper-right corner there will be a “happening now” ticker that shows what is happening in your social and musical universe, including songs that your friends are playing. There is some talk that this “Happening Now ticker” would show-up all throughout your music experience and not just on the music dashboard.

According to Business Insider, the new service could become a “billion dollar” business for Facebook. The social network’s goal, says BI‘s Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry, is to “do for music what it did for games: use its social graph to help Facebook users discover music and help music startups get users.”

Of course, with the massive licensing fees that go along with (legally) streaming music, it’s not yet clear how Facebook will make money off the new service. But if Music Dashboard does come to fruition — and works well to boot — then Facebook has the potential to cut into Apple’s iTunes territory.

News of Music Dashboard follows a variety of reports that indicate a rift between Apple and Facebook. Apple’s recent announcement that Twitter — not Facebook — will receive deep-level integration into iOS 5 sparked murmurs that the two companies were at odds. Then, just last week, rumors surfaced that Facebook has a web-based app market place, accessible through mobile Safari, that could compete with Apple’s App Store.

On its own, each report is merely another tech rumor amongst a hoard of rumors. Put together, however, and it becomes clear that Facebook has Apple in its crosshairs.

Google Purchase PushLife for Google Music

Google has scooped up PushLife for a possible iTunes competitor for

Android.

Friday Toronto-based PushLife announced that it was acquired by Google and now joins the search giant's Canadian engineering team. While specifics weren't provided, it's believed that the PushLife technology will be integrated into Android and Google's upcoming music service.
"When we started our journey in 2008, we set out to build immersive mobile experiences for people to play, organize, share and purchase digital content across multiple devices," the team said in a public statement. "But we think there's a lot more work to do in the mobile space, like improving the way applications look and making them easier to use. And as Google is driving innovation on the mobile web across a wide variety of areas, we thought joining the company would be a perfect fit."
PushLife was founded in 2008 by former Research In Motion corporate development executive Ray Reddy. Before the acquisition, PushLife's technology consisted of a media player (smartphone) and a media manager (PC), allowing the user to import libraries directly from iTunes and Windows Media Player to any non-Apple device. The suite also allowed users to share music via Twitter, edit ID3 tags on the go and more.
Additionally, PushLife also provided the baseline tech for the Virgin Mobile Live software offered in Canada and the UK. Virgin Mobile used the technology to develop mobile apps which combined the user's personal music collection with tunes available on the carrier's online store. This allowed for quick, one-click in-app purchases (and carrier billing) without having to exit the mobile app.
PushLife was reportedly working on a free version for BlackBerry and Android devices when Google made its proposal. PushLife has thus removed all signs of the software in progress from its website, indicating that the beta service offered for BlackBerry devices will eventually come to a close. There also isn't a listing for PushLife on the Android Market.
"The past three years have been an incredible ride and, while we will be eventually discontinuing the PushLife service, we look forward to more adventures at Google," the team said.
For now, we know that Google plans to launch a music service offering 5 GB of cloud storage. We've also seen an upgraded Android Music app that allows the user to stream music from the virtual space. We've also seen Amazon's similar offering, allowing users to purchase digital music and store/upload the files in the cloud. Customers can stream the music back through the browser-based desktop player or the Amazon MP3 app on Android.
But the inclusion of PushLife could mean more than just importing music from iTunes and Windows Media Player. There's a possibility Google plans to launch an iTunes competitor, allowing users to purchase music directly from Google.

How Mobile Number Portability Works in India

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) enables users to retain their existing mobile phone number even if they opt to switch for another network service provider.

Below is the process to be followed:-

* Send an SMS: PORTMobile Number to 1900 (eg. PORT 9123456899)

* You will get an SMS immediately with a 8 digit alpha-numeric porting code

* Submit the code to your preferred operator along with necessary paper documents (Note that the unique porting code expires after 24 hours)

* Once you are done with the documentations with your new operator, you will be successfully ported to the new network within a maximum of 4 working days.

* You are done.

It costs you a maximum of Rs. 19 to change your operator which sounds pretty reasonable. However any existing balance with the old operator won’t be carried forward to the new operator, spend them before applying for mobile number portability.

you have ported to different service provider, you can not change the operator for the next 90 days. The whole process of switching from one operator to another should not take more than 4 days and your number will be dead for about 2 hours between 10PM to 5AM.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a combination of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol with the SSL/TLS protocol to provide encrypted communication and secure identification of a network web server. HTTPS connections are often used for payment transactions on the World Wide Web and for sensitive transactions in corporate information systems. HTTPS should not be confused with Secure HTTP (S-HTTP) specified in RFC 2660

Difference from HTTP

As opposed to HTTP URLs which begin with "http://" and use port 80 by default, HTTPS URLs begin with "https://" and use port 443 by default.

HTTP is unsecured and is subject to man-in-the-middle and eavesdropping attacks which can let attackers gain access to website accounts and sensitive information. HTTPS is designed to withstand such attacks and is considered secure against such attacks (with the exception of older deprecated versions of SSL).

Network layers

HTTP operates at the highest layer of the OSI Model, the Application layer; but the security protocol operates at a lower sublayer, encrypting an HTTP message prior to transmission and decrypting a message upon arrival. Strictly speaking, HTTPS is not a separate protocol, but refers to use of ordinary HTTP over an encrypted Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) connection.

Everything in the HTTP message is encrypted, including the headers, and the request/response load. With the exception of the possible CCA cryptographic attack described in limitations section below, the attacker can only know the fact that a connection is taking place between the two, known to him, parties; the domain name and IP addresses.

Server setup

To prepare a web server to accept HTTPS connections, the administrator must create a public key certificate for the web server. This certificate must be signed by a trusted certificate authority for the web browser to accept it. The authority certifies that the certificate holder is indeed the entity it claims to be. Web browsers are generally distributed with the signing certificates of major certificate authorities so that they can verify certificates signed by them.

Acquiring certificates

Authoritatively signed certificates may be freeor cost between US$13and $1,500 per year.

Organizations may also run their own certificate authority, particularly if they are responsible for setting up browsers to access their own sites (for example, site

s on a company intranet, or major universities). They can easily add copies of their own signing certificate to the trusted certificates distributed with the browser.

Use as access control

The system can also be used for client authentication in order to limit access to a web server to authorized users. To do this, the site administrator typically creates a certificate for each user, a certificate that is loaded into his/her browser. Normally, that contains the name and e-mail address of the authorized user and is automatically checked b

y the server on each reconnect to verify the user's identity, potentially without even entering a password.

In case of compromised private key

A certificate may be revoked before it expires, for example be

cause the secrecy of the private key has been compromised. Newer versions of popular browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox,Opera,and Internet Explorer on Windows Vista implement the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) to verify that this is not the case. The browser sends the certificate's serial number to the certificate authority or its delegate via OCSP and the authority responds, telling the browser whether or not the certificate is still valid.

History
Netscape Communications created HTTPS in 1994 for its Nets

cape Navigator web browser.Originally, HTTPS was used with SSL encryption. As SSL evolved into Transport Layer Security (TLS), the current version of HTTPS was formally specified by RFC 2818 in May 2000.

The new Google secured service includes a modified logo to help indicate that you’re searching using SSL and that you may encounter a somewhat different Google search experience, but as always, remember to check the start of the address bar for “https” and your browser lock indicators.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a protocol that provides secure communications on the Internet for such things as web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging and other data transfers. If you enable SSL connections, Google will force HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) when your users access most services in Google Apps. SSL varies by service and is available for Email, Chat, Calendar, Docs, and Sites. Please note that SSL access is not available for Google Video for Business or the Google Talk desktop client.

The advantage of SSL is added security for your users. If your users access Google Apps on a non-secure Internet connection, such as a public wireless or non-encrypted network, your users' accounts may be more vulnerable to hijacking. A secure connection prevents hijacking by protecting the cookie session. Cookie session hijacking refers to a situation where an impostor gains unauthorized access to cookies and seizes control of a legitimate session while it is still in progress.

However, forcing HTTPS for your users can make Gmail a little slower. Also, please note that, if you enable SSL, you will not be able to see your mail in the Gmail gadget on the Google Apps Start Page since it is not served over SSL. If you trust the security of your network, you can turn this feature off at any time. When the feature is disabled, your users will access Google Apps via HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol).

To enable this feature:

Click Domain settings.

Under the General tab and in the SSL section, check the box next to Enable SSL.

Click Save changes.

Note: If you force HTTPS, your users won't be able to disable HTTPS on an individual basis. However, if you don't force HTTPS, your users can enable HTTPS when necessary but only if you also have enabled the Enable pre-release features check box in your Google Apps control panel.

Gmail Drive guide to use Gmail space as online storage drive hack

Gmail is really famous among users of all the email clients available on the web and that is not because it has a cool interface rather it is famous for its reliability and huge space which includes storage space of 6000 megabytes and increasing. Google doesn’t stop here and recently Google announced that users can now buy more online storage for Google services just by paying a little amount. So why not use this online storage space and use it externally probably as a network drive or one of your own computer hard drives.

I am going to show different methods by which your can use your Gmail account space as your external hard drive that too free. You will be able to download (or should I say copy) attachments from your Gmail account to your computer just as you would do from a drive on your computer. You can also use this space to upload content direct from your computer and save it online in your Gmail account.

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer.

GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.GMail Drive shell extension is a tool that creates a virtual filesystem.

Ever since Google started to offer users a GMail e-mail account, which includes storage space of a 1000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with.

With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your GMail account and retrieve them again. When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account.

The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the GMail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures.

But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.
You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Because the GMail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in GMail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters) to your archived mail folder.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 40 characters), and it doesn't make full use of the secure internet protocols available.

4G wireless: 20 questions Asked and Answered

As the proud owner of a 3G smartphone, you might have considered yourself a member of the leading edge of wireless services users. Then you started hearing ads and reading stories about something called "4G," and perhaps began wondering...what is it, where is it, can I get it, and do I want it?

Here's a quick list that explains what 4G is, what it can do, why it's the future of wireless communications, and where (and when) you might be able to get it.

1. What does "4G" mean, anyway?

4G is a marketing term that service providers are using to describe the "fourth generation" of wireless services. Such services may use different underlying technologies, depending on the provider, but they typically offer between four and ten times the performance of "3G" networks.

2. What are the technologies behind 4G services?

The two main technologies are WiMax and Long Term Evolution (LTE). WiMax is a standard developed by the IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; Development of the LTE standard is led by the 3GPP, an industry body for providers that use GSM, the current leading technology for cellular communications. Both WiMax and LTE use advanced antenna technology to improve reception and performance. However, the technologies rely on different types of wireless spectrum

3. How fast is 4G compared to 3G?

WiMax providers today are offering contracts that advertise download speeds of between 2 megabits per second and 6 mbps, with peak speeds of 10 mbps and more. Verizon, which will launch LTE networks in the United States later this year, is expecting to offer services with download speeds in the 5 mbps to 12 mbps range. Most 3G data systems today deliver speeds of between 400 kilobits per second (that is, 0.4 mbps) and 1.5 mbps.

4. Why should I want 4G?

4G's faster download speeds and better overall data performance will significantly improve the performance of demanding applications such as streaming video, videoconferencing, and networked gaming. You may also be able to replace your home DSL or cable modem service with a 4G service that you can use both at home and on the road.

5. Are 4G services available now?

Yes, in some places. In the United States, the partnership of Clearwire and Sprint currently offers WiMax-based services in 28 cities--among them, Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon), and Seattle. Clearwire and Sprint plan to add Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco to this list in 2010.

On the LTE side, Verizon is the most aggressive of the U.S. providers, with plans to launch commercial services in 25 to 30 as-yet unnamed markets before the end of 2010; AT&T plans to follow with LTE in 2011. Internationally, WiMax services are already in use in many countries, including Japan, Korea, and Russia; and one commercial LTE network is running in Sweden.

6. What providers other than Verizon and AT&T plan to offer LTE in the United States?

In March, MetroPCS announced plans to launch LTE services in Las Vegas before the end of this year, using a dual-mode 3G/LTE phone made by Samsung. T-Mobile is expected to launch LTE services sometime in the future, but it has not specified a timeframe for deployment.

7. What are the cost advantages of 4G versus 3G?

Right now, the Clearwire/Sprint plans typically provide true "unlimited" data usage, whereas virtually all 3G cellular plans impose extra charges for downloading more than 5 gigabytes of data per month. Plans from Clearwire and its reseller partners (which include Comcast and Time-Warner Cable) are typically $10 to $20 per month cheaper than the standard $60 per month 3G cellular data plan, too. Verizon has not announced LTE pricing.

8. Can I get 4G on the 3G phone or USB modem that I have now?

No. The 4G networks are designed to run at different frequencies than the ones current cellular services use, so you'll need new radio chips tuned to the 4G frequencies.

9. Does 4G support voice calls?

Not in any current implementation, other than Voice over IP applications like Skype or Vonage. Most early 4G phones will be "hybrid" devices that include a 3G chip to handle voice calls.

10. Are any 4G phones available now?

As of April 2010, the only 4G phone announced for U.S. markets is Sprint's HTC EVO 4G, which was unveiled in March and is expected to be available by this summer. (Earlier, HTC shipped a WiMax phone for a network in Russia.) Verizon has said that it expects LTE phones to ship by mid-2011.

11. Why doesn't the iPhone come in a 4G version?

Since Apple sells the iPhone in the United States under an exclusive contract with AT&T, it has manufactured the phone with chips that connect to AT&T's 3G cellular network. Many people hope that Verizon, which has more-immediate 4G plans for its network than AT&T does, will begin selling a CDMA version of the iPhone later this year.

12. Can I use 4G while I'm on the road, as with a cell phone?

Yes. The whole idea behind 4G is that it's not just broadband, but mobile broadband.

13. Can I use 4G services in different cities, similarly to roaming with a cell phone?

Yes, sort of. Roaming is supported between different cities covered by the same service, so a Clearwire or Sprint device you buy in Portland should work fine in Las Vegas or Chicago. LTE proponents say that they will support cross-provider roaming, but we'll have to wait a couple years to see whether that works. And while chip vendors have announced silicon that could link to either a WiMax or an LTE network, no as-yet-announced device can accomplish that trick.

14. Will 4G be offered in rural communities?

Smaller providers such as DigitalBridge Communications--which has services in Jackson Hole, Wyoming--already offer mobile WiMax similar to Clearwire's. A company called Open Range Communications has just started offering WiMax services in rural Colorado, and it plans to cover more than 500 rural communities over the next several years.

15. Can 4G services replace my home DSL or cable modem?

Yes, unless you're looking for extra-high-speed services for extremely demanding broadband usage. Clearwire's WiMax service already offers faster speeds than the lower-end DSL plans, and it can match some cable modem offerings. For users who want both home and mobile service, WiMax 4G may be a better deal than the combined price of a stationary service and a 3G data plan.

16. What is a portable Wi-Fi router, and how does it use 4G?

Clearwire and Sprint sell two versions of a portable Wi-Fi/WiMax router, which uses a link to WiMax on the back end to support a "personal hotspot" capable of broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal that several devices can share. Sprint's forthcoming HTC EVO 4G phone will be able to act as a portable router, too, sharing its WiMax connection with up to eight other devices via Wi-Fi.

17. I've been hearing recently about "HSPA+" or "3.5G" service. What is it?

T-Mobile USA is in the process of launching a mobile data network based on a more-advanced version of the 3G protocols in use today. Theoretically the network can support speeds of up to 21 mbps, but in tests so far it is only marginally faster than most 3G data services. T-Mobile hopes to have the service available in 100 U.S. cities by the end of 2010.

18. Why do some people say that current 4G services are not "true" 4G?

Standards bodies have set higher speed goals for what they would like to define as "official" 4G services, performance marks that likely won't be metfor another couple years at the earliest. But marketers think that what's available now is a big enough leap to justify the "next-generation" label--and they're the ones who buy the ads.

19. Will "real" 4G services ever be available?

Both WiMax and LTE backers are working on versions of the technology that will support "true" 4G speeds of more than 100 mbps for downloads, but real products using those versions probably won't appear for several years.

20. When will this great service be available in my town?

It all depends on when providers decide that your metro area is worthy! Clearwire and Sprint both have interactive maps on their Websites showing where and when services are likely to be available. Verizon is expected to announce its first LTE cities later this summer or early next fall.

Google Maps 4.2 for Android Introduces Bike Directions and Location Sharing

Android's Market has a ton of apps, and while there are plenty of high-quality, professional, and good-looking examples (yesterday also marked the release of the New York Times's excellent official Android app), as a rule, Android apps are often less impressive than competing iPhone apps. But Google's own apps are amazing almost without exception. Gmail, Sky Maps, Goggles, Voice, and Listen are just about the best of their type around, regardless of OS, and Maps for Android beats every other version of Maps, hands down.

So every update to Google Maps for Android is a big deal--the features may eventually trickle down to other platforms like the iPhone and WebOS, but for the moment, features like Maps Navigation are still Android-only. The newest update, 4.2, includes three major new options (really, two major and one minor--I don't think Navigation getting a separate launcher is that big a deal).

First, biking directions:

Just in time for National Bike Month, select the bike icon when getting directions to get an optimal bicycling route in the U.S. If you’re in the mood for a more scenic ride, you’ll also see the Bicycling layer on the map which shows dedicated bike-only trails (dark green), roads with bike lanes (light green), or roads that are good for biking but lack a dedicated lane (dashed green). You can always turn on this layer from the Layers menu to pick your own route. Add in the Labs’ Terrain layer, and you can decide to either climb or avoid that big hill on the way home!

Hopefully the terrain layer does a good job--I've been led up unclimbable hills here in San Francisco by bike planner utilities in the past, and it's always an infuriating and sometimes humiliating experience. I've actually had to dismount and hike up a hill so steep the city had to carve stairs into the sidewalk due to one of those bike planners, leading to my taking the bus for a solid month afterwards out of anger and sore calves.

Second, sharing. This is a really useful little addition. From the search results, you can hit "share this place" to share any place via email, text message, Twitter, Facebook, or Buzz. Instead of texting an address or an intersection, you can just share a direct link--great for communicating between two people with smartphones. I really like this feature; almost all of my text messages are some variation on "where do I meet you" or "meet me here," and usually go for a few more attempts before I find whoever I'm looking for. This is a nice easy way to get that information across quickly.

Kayak.com Cofounder Paul English Plans to Blanket Africa in Free Wireless Internet

Paul English, the cofounder of travel search engine Kayak.com, wants to blanket all of Africa with free and low-cost Wi-Fi. It's a "big, big project," one that will consume the next decade of his life, English tells FastCompany.com.

JoinAfrica aims to bring a world of information to a continent whose population only has 8.7% Internet penetration right now. At the core of JoinAfrica is the belief that providing basic Internet is as essential to society as clean water and clean power.

English plans to kick off the nonprofit/for-profit hybrid this summer and begin creating partnerships between JoinAfrica and local African for-profit telcos. JoinAfrica would first branch out existing Web connections in villages using, for example, simple WiMAC hubs. Through these hubs, JoinAfrica would provide residents with free basic Web service, including access to email, Google, Wikipedia, and various news sources. Downloads of data-rich video, porn, or other non-essential sites would be limited (similar to what libraries in the U.S. do now), via a process called "bandwidth shaping." Local for-profits would charge for upgraded access and faster connection speeds, and English is also searching for ways to make sure these local companies continuously improve the service and lay more fiber.

"I want this to be completely self-sustaining," he says.

From his home in Boston, English says he's already bought satellite dishes and other gear and helped hook up villages in a number of African countries over the past decade, from Burundi to Uganda and Malawi to Zambia. "Having email and Skype has been transformative for the handful of villages I've worked in," he says. He cites the example of a doctor who, unable to diagnose a patient's rash, was able to take a photograph of it, email it to a doctor in Boston, and then communicate online to find a cure--turns out the mystery rash needed immediate treatment.

Soon, however, it became clear that one-off projects weren't enough. "It occurred to me that there is something bigger that needs to be done," he says. "The continent of Africa has been so fucked over from an economic standpoint -- as an engineer, how do I use my skills to do something that's transformative?"

English says he's aware of the potential for corruption from local for-profits but promises he's working with infrastructure experts to assure the system is "incredibly measurable and incredibly managed." He's hired two MIT grad students to help and has contacts in a half-dozen African countries to get started on the first phase of the project, which will focus on areas where basic infrastructure is already in place.

Though English admits the project might cost billions, he's committed to the initiative, even if it means self-financing. Kayak, he jokes, has helped indirectly already. "The way Kayak is involved is that it's helping make me very wealthy, and I plan to deploy that wealth," he says. And while ever completing a project of this size might be a long shot, English says he's on the verge of announcing a major infrastructure partner (he declined to say exactly who just yet). JoinAfrica's massive scale and hybrid business model have won over potential partners who might otherwise have viewed a free Internet scheme as a threat to their existing for-profit infrastructure.

"If you take something, raise it up a couple of notches, and say, let's do something on a massive scale, it changes the conversation," English says.

Largest scientific instrument ever built to prove Einstein's theory of general relativity

Three spacecraft flying three million miles apart are to fire laser beams at each other across the emptiness of space in a bid to finally prove whether a theory proposed by Albert Einstein is correct.

Physicists hope the ambitious mission will allow them to prove the existence of gravitational waves – a phenomenon predicted in Einstein's famous theory of general relativity and the last piece of his theory still to be proved correct.

The mission, a collaboration between Nasa and the European Space Agency, will use three spacecraft flying in formation while orbiting the sun, with each housing floating cubes of gold platinum.

Laser beams fired between the spacecraft will then be used to measure minute changes in the distance between each of the cubes, caused by the weak waves of gravity that ripple out from catastrophic events in deep space.

Einstein's theory of general relativity predicted that when large objects such as black holes collide, ripples in space and time flow outwards. These ripples are called gravitational waves.

A panel of international experts have now set out a detailed plan for the mission and how it can be used to reveal new insights about the universe around us.

Professor Jim Hough, an expert on gravitational waves at Glasgow University and a member of the committee that drew up the plans, said: "Gravitational waves are the last piece of Einstein's theory of general relativity that has still to be proved correct.

"They are produced when massive objects like black holes or collapsed stars accelerate through space, perhaps because they being pulled towards another object with greater gravitational pull like a massive black hole.

"Unfortunately we haven't been able to detect them yet because they are very weak. However, the new experiments we are working on have great potential to allow detection."

Ground based attempts to detect gravitational waves on Earth have so far been unsuccessful and can only look for gravitational waves with relatively high frequencies.

Scientists have already been able to prove a number of predictions made by Einstein's theory of general relativity, including that light is bent by gravity, gravity travels at a constant speed, that time can be warped by gravity and that space and time can bend.

Einstein's other theories including his most famous formula E=mc² have also withstood scientific testing.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, or LISA as the new space based mission is called, will be able to detect gravitational waves of very low frequencies due to the huge distance between the three spacecraft. It will be the largest detector ever built.

A smaller test mission called LISA Pathfinder, which is being built by British engineers at space company Astrium EADS and is due to be launched next year, is to pave the way for the more ambitious mission by demonstrating the technology to be used to detect the waves.

Scientists have already begun building the instruments that will be used in LISA itself, but it is not expected to be launched before 2020.

They hope that once detected, gravitational waves will be able to provide new information about the universe that cannot currently be seen using electromagnetic radiation such as light, radio waves and X-rays.

Professor Sheila Rowan, who also studies gravitational waves at Glasgow University, added: "Black holes are so dense that no light or radiation escapes from inside them.

"Gravitational waves from the warped spacetime around black holes could give us new ways of looking at them.

"We could also learn about the state of matter inside collapsed stars."

Dr Ralph Cordey, science and exploration business development manager at Astrium UK who are building LISA Pathfinder, said: "Trying to measure cosmic events such as collapsing star systems or the collision of massive black holes throughout our universe requires ultra-high precision technology.

"The ultimate goal is to prove that this technology works, before we attempt to put three spacecraft into orbits at a distance of 5 million kilometres from one another, connected only by a laser beam that will measure their positions accurate to 40 millionths of a millionth of a metre.

5 cool Google Apps tricks for business users

ou're probably familiar with the Google Apps basics: Perhaps you use Gmail or have uploaded some files to Google Docs, or maybe you've tinkered in Google Sites to develop your own Web site. But whether you're new to Google Apps or you're a seasoned user, it's worth taking a deeper look.

Google has built into its suite some lesser-known shortcuts and tricks that can make your use of Google apps more customized, streamlined and simple. Consider these five to start.

1. Enable shortcuts in Gmail for faster use

Gmail keyboard shortcuts

Google's Gmail shortcuts -- almost 50 of them available in total -- help you save time while reading, composing, deleting and archiving e-mails in your inbox.

By default, this shortcuts feature is turned off. To enable it, log into your Gmail account and choose "Settings" from the navigation bar on the top right of your screen. The third option is "Keyboard shortcuts" -- choose "Keyboard shortcuts on."

2. Add events to Google Calendar via SMS

If you're at the airport and forgot to schedule a meeting in your Google Calendar, don't worry: You can easily add events via your cell phone in a few quick steps.

First, sign into your Google Calendar account and choose "Settings." Then, click the "Mobile Setup" tab and enter the necessary information. A verification code will be sent to your phone; enter the code in the appropriate field and click "Finish setup."

Once the setup is complete, you can send events to your calendar via your phone. Do so by texting the details of your event (for example: "Dinner with John at Jimmy's 6:30pm May 16) to GVENT (48368). You'll receive a confirmation text message shortly after, and the event will appear in your calendar.

3. Whiteboard collaboratively with Google Drawings

Google Drawings is the newest app added to Google's suite of cloud-based tools. This stand-alone editor in Google Docs lets you create charts, diagrams, designs and other schematics -- perfect if you're working on visualizing a project timeline or even mind-mapping an idea.

To access Google Drawings, sign into your account and click "Documents." Then click "Create new" and choose "Drawing" from the drop-down menu to begin your work.

A few other highlights: You can edit your drawings in real time with anyone you choose by selecting "Share" and inviting people. You can also chat with others who are editing your drawing, from within the drawings editor. These two features will be rolled out fully by next month; right now you can opt in to its "preview" by visiting your Docs settings page, choosing the "Editing tab" and clicking "Create new text documents using the latest version of the document editor."

Also, the drawings editor supports alignment guides, snap to grid and publishing drawings as images.

4. Turn PDFs into editable text

If you've downloaded a PDF that you want to edit, or if you've scanned in a document that you want to convert to a Google Doc, use the Google Documents List API -- a tool that uses optical character recognition to convert high-resolution image files with text into text that you can edit.

To do this, log into your Google account and visit this site. Select the file you want to convert from your computer and click "Start OCR import." Note that your file has to be fairly high resolution -- 10-pixel character height is recommended. The maximum file size is 10 MB.

When your upload is complete, the document will load in Google Docs, where you can make changes to it. Depending on the quality of the document, some words may not translate. These will be highlighted in yellow and say "unrecognized text."

5. View your calendar events in multiple time zones

If you travel frequently or hold offices in multiple time zones, you can configure your Google Calendar to preview according to more than one time zone, eliminating confusion and frantic time calculations before meetings.

To enable this, visit the "Settings" tab in your Google Calendar. Under "Your current time zone" choose to add an additional one, and label it appropriately. When you visit another time zone, visit this page again and click the "Swap" button on the right. This will configure your calendar so that all meetings and appointments will appear in your current time zone's time.

Isn't it ironic? Or maybe that's not even the best term to use here. Isn't it...weird? Wikipedia has quickly become the go-to place for knowledge on the Internet, and while it cannot always be trusted completely, it's usually a great place to start searching for information on pretty much any topic you can think of. It's certainly better than the paper-based encyclopedias of old, which is what makes this whole situation so strange. We've always heard that history repeated itself, but it literally is with this bit of news... Wikipedia is now offering books for now.

There's no mistake or typographical error here. PediaPress is the official print-on-demand partner of Wikipedia, which is now enabling readers to create and buy "custom books based on individual selections of Wikipedia content." There's over 3 million English articles along to choose from, and users can pick and choose as they see fit. What's crazy is that there's a chance that a Wikipedia entry will change or be updated between the time the book is printed and it arrives on someone's doorstep, but we guess that's the point.

If you're looking to buy a time capsule or a relic of some sort, there's really no better place to look than here. As of today, a "Create A Book" button has been added to the Print/Export section of Wikipedia's left-side navigation pane, and the pricing on these books starts at just $8.90. Believe it or not, books can be turned around and shipped within 2 days, but there's no apparent way to get an eBook copy. Imagine that. The Internet knowledge database that killed the paper Encyclopedia now sells paper books, but not digital eBooks.

As of now, only paperback books are being sold, but hard-copy books are planned. There's your gift-getting service you've been dreaming of... maybe.

Intel, Samsung join to accelerate WiMax 2 development

Intel Corp. said it was collaborating with companies including Samsung and Motorola to develop the next generation of WiMax mobile broadband technology, which will provide a speed boost in 4G wireless data transfers.

The companies have joined a new group, the WiMax 2 Collaboration Initiative, which aims to accelerate the development of standards and devices surrounding WiMax 2 technology, the companies said in a joint press release. The group will collaborate with the WiMax Forum, an industry organization that certifies and promotes WiMax products.

WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a wireless technology that provides fast data-transfer rates over a wider area than Wi-Fi. The technology is finding adoption in Western European and developing countries, and is available in the U.S. through companies like Sprint and Clearwire. The new standard will provide transfer rates of more than 300Mbit.sec. at peak rates.

Typical transfer rates on current WiMax networks could be between 4Mbit/sec. to 6Mbit/sec. for downloads and 1Mbit/sec. to 2Mbit/sec. s for uploads, but could scale higher depending on the distance from a tower, Intel has said.

The new WiMax 2 specification is built on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.16m standard, which includes advanced on-air capabilities compared to the current WiMax deployments based on the 802.16e standard, the companies said. The 802.16m standard will be backward-compatible with previous standards and is expected to be completed by the second half of this year, the companies said.

There is increasing demand for rich-media applications on mobile devices, and the improvements will help WiMax operators provide the necessary bandwidth, the companies said. The improvements in WiMax 2 include lower latency and increased VOIP (voice-over-Internet-protocol) capacity.

Users on Clearwire's WiMax network are consuming an average of 7GB of data per month, said Mike Sievert, chief commercial officer at Clearwire, in the statement. The improvements will be a step forward to meet increased data consumption, he said.

A number of WiMax devices are already available in the market. HTC in March released the EVO 4G smartphone, which includes WiMax capabilities. Intel has also invested a lot in the technology, and offers a chipset for laptops to connect to WiMax networks. But many wireless carriers including AT&T and Verizon support the development of LTE (Long-Term Evolution), an upcoming 4G technology that could compete with WiMax. Intel hasn't said if it would support LTE, but is keeping its options open, a company executive said earlier this year.

The organizations joining the WiMax 2 Collaboration Initiative include Alvarion, Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Sequans, XRONet and ZTE and Taiwanese research organization, ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute).

iPad online use approaches Android, BlackBerry

In its first 10 days, Apple's iPad has captured almost as much online usage share as the BlackBerry or Google's Android operating system, a Web metrics firm said today.

According to data from Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based NetApplications.com, the iPad's share has averaged 0.03% since April 3, the day Apple started selling the media tablet. Although that number is puny compared to the major operating systems -- Windows XP, for example, accounts for 64.5% of the total market -- it's within striking distance of longer-available rivals.

Research In Motion's BlackBerry, for example, had a usage share of 0.04% for the month of March. Android, meanwhile, accounted for the same figure, split evenly between Android 1.5 and Android 1.6, NetApplications said.

By comparison, Windows Millennium, or Windows ME, the often-derided 2000 successor to Windows 98, was also at 0.04% last month.

But the iPad can't hold a candle to Apple's older mobile siblings. By NetApplications' count, Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch devices have a combined share of 0.6%, about 20 times larger than the iPad's.

Yesterday, Apple announced that it had sold more than half a million iPads in the first week of availability, a number that included pre-orders which kicked off March 12. The company cited the sales number as indicative of a "surprisingly strong U.S. demand" that forced it to postpone the tablet's international launch until the end of May. Originally, Apple had said it would start selling the iPad outside the U.S. later this month.

"I don't think it's a component-specific supply issue," said Brian Marshall, an analyst with BroadPoint AmTech. "It's more likely a production issue. This is a brand new device, and it has a ton of tiny screws," Marshall added, noting that it's common for early production runs to have problems as kinks are worked out.

"And in the end, this won't matter. Actually, I think it could be a good thing for the company," Marshall said. By pushing back the international launch, Apple postpones the likely spike in sales -- and thus a draw-down on inventory -- and has more time to smooth out sales.

Apple will begin taking orders from international customers May 12.

Windows 7's share breaks 10% mark

Microsoft's latest OS will replace Vista in the No. 2 spot by June, data shows

Windows 7 reached the 10% usage milestone almost a year faster than its berated predecessor, Vista, did, according to Web analytics company Net Applications.

But the growth of Windows 7 has yet to have an impact on Microsoft Corp.'s overall share of the operating system market, which returned to its usual downward trend last month after a one-month advance. Windows dropped to a 91.6% share, down half a percentage point from February.

The new operating system again grabbed share from both Windows XP and Vista, with the former losing twice as much, on a percentage basis, as the latter. Windows XP slid to 64.5%, down a full point, while Vista lost one-half of a percentage point to end at 16%.

Vista appears to be on a fast slide to nowhere: March was the fifth consecutive month in which the beleaguered version of Windows lost share, and it was the sixth month of the last seven in which it did so. If Vista maintains its trajectory from the last three months, it will drop under 10% before the end of this year.

Windows 7's and Vista's paths should cross in June, when Windows 7 is projected to become Microsoft's second-most-used operating system.

Windows XP still accounts for the majority of the editions of Windows in use. More than 70% of the computers using Windows in March were running XP, which has three years of life left before Microsoft pulls the support plug in mid-April 2014.

Windows 7's gains show some signs of slowing, according to Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Net Applications. March's 1.5-point increase was slightly off the new operating system's monthly average gain of 1.7 percentage points during the period from November 2009 to February 2010.

Even so, Windows 7 beat Vista to the 10% mark by nearly a year. While Windows 7 reached the milestone just five months after its public release, Vista didn't hit that mark until May 2008, 16 months after its retail debut.

Meanwhile, Mac OS X's share of the operating system market rebounded by three-tenths of a percentage point last month, with Apple Inc.'s operating system ending the month with a 5.3% share. The increase countered a recent downward trend in which Mac OS X lost share in three out of the four previous months. March's increase was the largest for Mac OS X since December 2008.

But for Vince Vizzaccaro, executive vice president of marketing at Net Applications, the news last month wasn't the 10% for Windows 7 but the continued increase in the use of mobile devices to go online. By Net Applications' numbers, mobile operating systems powered 1.7% of the hardware used to access the Web; that's an increase of 0.15 of a percentage point, and double the mobile share of August 2009. "Mobile growth is now more a curve than a straight line," observed Vizzaccaro.

After Google-China dust-up, cyberwar emerges as a threat

The episode highlighted cyberthreats facing the U.S., but it's not a war -- yet

Few events have crystallized U.S. fears over a cyber catastrophe, or brought on calls for a strategic response, more than the recent attacks against Google and more than 30 other tech firms.

The company's disclosure in January that it was attacked by China-based hackers -- and its subsequent decision to scale back operations there -- have stoked long-standing fears over the ability of cyber adversaries to penetrate commercial and government networks in the U.S.

If a full-fledged cyberwar were to break out, the nation's economy would be hit hard. Banks might not be able function, electricity, water and other utilities could be shut off, air travel would almost certainly be disrupted, and communications would be spotty at best -- in a word, chaos.

Few think that such a war is imminent. But damage has already been done by a slew of cyberattacks that, while well short of cyberwar, have still resulted in the theft of terabytes of intellectual property data, trade secrets and classified military and government information. That information is now in the hands of overseas groups, many of which are thought to be state-sponsored.

It's not just data and secrets. Cyberthieves have also made off with billions of dollars from U.S companies and banks, and there are growing concerns that cyberattackers are making subtle changes to software source code. That way, they can create permanent windows into a company's operations for future mischief.

An 'existential threat'

Many see the attacks as evidence that the U.S. is already in the midst of an undeclared cyberwar, with attacks against government targets estimated to have more than doubled in the past two years. Just last week, a top FBI official called cyberattacks an "existential threat" to the U.S. On Friday, two U.S. senators now pushing cybersecurity legislation in Congress reiterated those sentiments.

And Mike McConnell the former director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and director of national intelligence during the Bush administration, recently said in a Washington Post column that the U.S is not only fighting such a war, it's also losing the battle.

That sentiment was echoed by U.S. Navy Admiral Robert Willard. who warned Congress about U.S military and government networks being hit by attacks that appeared to originate from China. The attacks are challenging the military's ability to "operate freely in the cyber commons," he said.

Those views are shared by security experts in both the government and the private sector who see the relentless probing and attacks on U.S agencies and commercial interests as a precursor to something more devastating. The concern is prompting action of sorts in Washington. In just the past month, two major cybersecurity bills have been proposed. One would tie U.S financial aid to a country's willingness to fight cybercrime. The other would strengthen domestic cybersecurity and require the president to work with private industry in responding to a cyber crisis. Google, China now playing cat and mouse?

The Chinese government apparently slowed access to Google Web sites earlier this week, as the search giant last night backed off earlier statements that access to the site was blocked by changes Google made to the engine's search parameters.

That change prompted analysts today to speculate that the two sides might soon become embroiled in a "cat-and-mouse" game over search access in China.

Google had disclosed early this week some users in China were unable to complete Google searches or had intermittent trouble accessing any of Google's Chinese-language sites.

That disclosure prompted some immediate speculation that China was blocking access to the sites because of Google's decision to stop censoring search results in the country.

The speculation abated yesterday afternoon when Google announced that it had accidentally caused the blockage itself.

A spokeswoman told Computerworld then that access to the Chinese site, now run out of Hong Kong, was blocked because its programmers had added a series of letters -- gs_rfai -- to the Web addresses of Google search pages. The spokeswoman explained that "rfa" is associated with Radio Free Asia, a site that China has long blocked. Therefore, adding them automatically caused Google's site to be blocked there.

Now, Google says that something in China's Internet filter, or "great firewall," caused the site to be blocked.

"Having looked into this issue in more detail, it's clear we actually added this [gs_rfai] parameter a week ago. So whatever happened today to block Google.com.hk must have been as a result of a change in the great firewall," a Google spokesman wrote today in an email to Computerworld. "However, interestingly our search traffic in China is now back to normal, even though we have not made any changes at our end. We will continue to monitor what is going on, but for the time being this issue seems to be resolved."

Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, said it's possible that the intermittent blockage of Google sites earlier this week could indicate that China is either testing the waters or just trying to make it a bit difficult for users to access the sites.

"If the numbers going to google.com.hk are small, China probably won't bother [with blocking them]. But if the traffic picks up, there will probably be some blockage," he added.

Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group, said an intermittent blockage of Google sites in China could be just the tip of the iceberg as the Chinese government may take further, stronger steps in the coming weeks in retaliation to Google's censorship decision.

"What we could be seeing is the beginning of a cat-and-mouse game with China making subtle changes to their great firewall to block or degrade Google service in China," Olds said. "The intermittent blocking might be China experimenting with new techniques, or it might be them thinking that the best way to cause Google the most trouble is to cause on-and-off problems that are harder to diagnose."

Olds said he expects China to continue responding to Google's move in some ways.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see this pattern play out again and again as China looks to harass Google," noted Olds. "In China's mind, the fact that Google initially thought this problem was their own fault is seen as a victory since it makes it look as if Google doesn't know what their own systems are doing."

As of press time, Google's sites were accessible in China.

Hacker busts IE8 on Windows 7 in 2 minutes

Two researchers yesterday won $10,000 each at the Pwn2Own hacking contest by bypassing important security measures of Windows 7.

Both Peter Vreugdenhil of the Netherlands and a German researcher who would only identify himself by the first name Nils found ways to disable DEP (data execution prevention) and ASLR (address space layout randomization), which are two of Windows 7's most vaunted anti-exploit features. Each contestant faced down the fully-patched 64-bit version of Windows 7 and came out a winner.

Vreugdenhil used a two-exploit combination to circumvent first ASLR and then DEP to successfully hack IE8. A half-hour later, Nils bypassed the same defensive mechanisms to exploit Mozilla's Firefox 3.6. For their efforts, each was awarded the notebook they attacked, $10,000 in cash and a paid trip to the DefCon hackers conference in Las Vegas this July.

"Every exploit today has been top-notch," said Aaron Portnoy, security research team lead at 3Com's TippingPoint security unit, the sponsor of the contest, in an interview at the end of the day Wednesday. "The one on IE8 was particularly impressive."

Vreugdenhil, a freelance vulnerability researcher, explained how he bypassed DEP and ASLR. To outwit ASLR -- which randomly shuffles the positions of key memory areas to make it much more difficult for hackers to predict whether their attack code will actually run -- Vreugdenhil used a heap overflow vulnerability that allowed him to obtain the base address of a .dll module that IE8 loads into memory. He then used that to run his DEP-skirting exploit.

DEP, which Microsoft introduced in 2004 with Windows XP Service Pack 2, prevents malicious code from executing in sections of memory not intended for code execution and is a defense against, among other things, buffer-overflow attacks.

"[The exploit] reuses Microsoft's own code to disable DEP," said Vreugdenhil. "You can reuse Microsoft's own code to disable memory protection."

In a paper he published today (download PDF), Vreugdenhil spelled out in more detail how he evaded both ASLR and DEP.

"It was a two-step exploitation," Vreugdenhil said of the unusual attack. "I could have done it with one, but it would have taken too long." Using the double-exploit technique gave him control of the machine in a little over two minutes; if he had used only one exploit, the task would have required 50 to 60 minutes.

"I didn't know how much time I would have at Pwn2Own," he said, referring to the constraints of the contest, where hackers had limited time slots. And he didn't want to bore his audience. "I put some eye candy in the exploit," he said, referring to a progress bar he inserted that read "Please be patient while you are being exploited..."

"It feels great," said Vreugdenhil of winning. "But I was nervous. I was convinced that there would be other exploits for IE8." This year's Pwn2Own was a first-come, first-served contest: The first researcher to hack each browser would win $10,000, but the second would take home nothing.

Nils also sidestepped DEP and ASLR in Windows 7 when he exploited the newest version of Firefox later in the day. Like Vreugdenhil, Nils also was awarded the notebook and $10,000. This was Nils' second Pwn2Own victory; last year he grabbed $15,000 by exploiting not only Firefox, but also Safari and IE8.

"As usual, Nils' exploit was very thorough," said TippingPoint's Portnoy, who is the organizer of the Pwn2Own contest.

TippingPoint purchased the rights to the flaws and attack code from Vreugdenhil, Nils and the other Pwn2Own winners. It will turn over that information to Microsoft, Mozilla and other affected vendors on Friday at the conclusion of the contest. Until vendors patch their vulnerabilities, TippingPoint will not disclose any technical information about the bugs.

Both Microsoft Corp. and Mozilla Corp. had representatives on hand during the contest.

Later, Jerry Bryant, a senior manager with the Microsoft Security Research Center (MSRC) acknowledged the vulnerabilities exploited by Vreugdenhil, but little else. "Microsoft is aware of a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer introduced at CanSecWest in the Pwn2own contest," Bryant said in an e-mail Wednesday. "We are investigating the issue and we will take appropriate steps to protect customers when the investigation is complete."

Bryant did not say when Microsoft would patch the flaws Vreugdenhil used. The company's next scheduled Patch Tuesday is April 13, but Microsoft typically takes much longer to produce its fixes, with testing time alone often running 30 to 60 days.

The lesson from this year's Pwn2Own is pretty simple, suggested Charlie Miller, another of Wednesday's winners. "What you can see at Pwn2Own is that bugs are still in software, and exploit mitigations like DEP and ASLR don't work. Even as [defensive measures] improve, researchers still end up winning."

Ignore sites that nag to press the Help key, says zero-day bug advisory

Microsoft told Windows XP users today not to press the F1 key when prompted by a Web site, as part of its reaction to an unpatched vulnerability that hackers could exploit to hijack PCs running Internet Explorer (IE).

In a security advisory issued late Monday, Microsoft confirmed the unpatched bug in VBScript that Polish researcher Maurycy Prodeus had revealed Friday, offered more information on the flaw and provided some advice on how to protect PCs until a patch shipped.

"The vulnerability exists in the way that VBScript interacts with Windows Help files when using Internet Explorer," read the advisory. "If a malicious Web site displayed a specially crafted dialog box and a user pressed the F1 key, arbitrary code could be executed in the security context of the currently logged-on user."

Last week, Prodeus called the bug a "logic flaw," and said attackers could exploit it by feeding users malicious code disguised as a Windows help file -- such files have a ".hlp" extension -- then convincing them to press the F1 key when a pop-up appeared. He rated the vulnerability as "medium" because of the required user interaction.

Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are impacted by the bug, said Microsoft, and any supported versions of Internet Explorer (IE) on those operating systems -- including IE6 on Windows XP -- could be leveraged by attackers. Previously, Prodeus had said that users running IE7 and IE8 were at risk, but had not called out IE6.

Until a patch is ready, users can protect themselves by not pressing the F1 key if a Web site tells them to, said Microsoft.

"As an interim workaround, users are advised to avoid pressing F1 on dialogs presented from Web pages or other Internet content," said David Ross with the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) engineering staff in a blog entry on Monday.

"The prompt can appear repeatedly when dismissed, nagging the user to press the F1 key," Ross added.

The security advisory made the same recommendation: "Our analysis shows that if users do not press the F1 key on their keyboard, the vulnerability cannot be exploited."

Users can also stymie attacks by disabling Windows Help. The advisory explained how to entering a one-line command at a Windows command-line prompt to lock down the Help system.

The company took Prodeus to task for taking the bug public, something it regularly does when researchers disclose a vulnerability or post sample attack code before a patch is available.

"Microsoft is concerned that this vulnerability was not responsibly disclosed, potentially putting customers at risk," said Jerry Bryant, a senior manager with the MSRC, in an e-mail. By Prodeus' account, he notified Microsoft of the flaw Feb. 1, about four weeks before publishing his findings.

Microsoft has not set a timeline for a fix, saying only that, "Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect our customers." The next scheduled security patch date for the company is March 9.

Although it does not rate the severity of vulnerabilities in its advisories, Microsoft noted that hackers exploiting the VBScript flaw using Windows Help and Internet Explorer could grab complete control of a Windows system.

Customers running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 are safe from such attacks, Microsoft said

New zero-day involves IE, puts Windows XP users at risk

Microsoft investigates unpatched flaw that affects users running IE7 and IE8

Microsoft on Sunday confirmed it's investigating an unpatched bug in VBScript that hackers could exploit to plant malware on Windows XP machines running Internet Explorer (IE).

The flaw could be used by attackers to inject malicious code onto victims' PCs, said Maurycy Prodeus, the Polish security analyst with iSEC Security Research who revealed the vulnerability and posted attack code on Friday.

Users running IE7 or the newer IE8 are at risk, said Prodeus.

Microsoft noted it's already on the case. "Microsoft is investigating new public claims of a vulnerability involving the use of VBScript and Windows Help files within Internet Explorer," said Jerry Bryant, a senior manager with the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), in an e-mail Sunday. *The current state of our investigations shows that Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2, are not affected."

Bryant added that Microsoft has not yet seen any evidence of attacks exploiting the vulnerability.

Prodeus called the bug a "logic flaw," and said attackers could exploit it by feeding users malicious code disguised as a Windows help file -- such files have a ".hlp" extension -- then convincing them to press the F1 key when a pop-up appeared. He rated the vulnerability as "medium" because of the required user interaction.

"First an attacker needs to force a victim to visit a malicious Web page," Prodeus said in an e-mail Sunday. "The victim must be using Windows XP [and] Internet Explorer. A bit of social engineering is required to persuade the victim to push F1 button when [a] VBScript pop-up is displayed."

Another security researcher, Cesar Cerrudo, confirmed that Prodeus' proof-of-concept exploit works. "I tried the exploit and I can confirm it reliably works on IE8 with Windows XP fully patched," said Cerrudo, the head of Argeniss Information Security, an Argentinean security consultancy.

Cerrudo thought that the flaw was more serious than did Prodeus. "I would say the vulnerability is 'high severity,' not 'medium,'" said Cerrudo in an e-mail. "It's not critical since it needs user interaction, the user pressing F1 key when a message dialog is displayed. [But] I would say that there is a high probability a regular user will press F1 key if asked, since an attacker can annoy the user with hundred of messages telling the user to press F1 to continue."

According to Cerrudo, Prodeus' attack is successful because it abuses the VBScript "MsgBox()" function.

"Windows Help files are included in a long list of what we refer to as 'unsafe file types'," acknowledged Microsoft's Bryant in a follow-up on the MSRC blog later on Sunday. "These are file types that are designed to invoke automatic actions during normal use of the files. While they can be very valuable productivity tools, they can also be used by attackers to try and compromise a system."

Bryant didn't provide a timeline for a fix, but used Microsoft boilerplate in his e-mail to say that the company might address the vulnerability with a regularly-scheduled fix, a so-called "out-of-band" update or other guidance.

Microsoft's next scheduled security release date is March 9.

Although Microsoft has not yet recommended any defensive steps Windows XP users can take until a patch is available, Prodeus said blocking the outbound TCP port 445 would stymie attacks. "However, it is worth to note that blocking this port doesn't solve the problem, because there might be [an]other attacking vector, for example, uploading an arbitrary file to the victim's machine at known path location using some third-party browser plug-ins," he said.

Another workaround, said Cerrudo in a Friday tweet, is to ditch IE for another browser.

More than 100 companies targeted by Google hackers

The attack was larger than initially thought

The hackers who broke into Google two months ago have gone after more than 100 companies, according to an estimate by security vendor Isec Partners.

Researchers have been closing in on the unidentified criminals responsible for the attack over the past month. In the process, they have uncovered another 68 so-called command-and-control servers, used to control the hacked machines.

Investigators had already identified 34 hacked companies after examining the single command-and-control server used in the Google attack, and the discovery of another 68 servers could mean that many more companies were compromised than previously thought. "It's easily over 100 companies," said Alex Stamos a partner with Isec Partners.

In the weeks since Google went public with details of the hack, informal discussion lists have sprung up, including security experts and staffers from companies that have been compromised. In those discussions, "that list of control machines keeps getting longer and longer," Stamos said.

The code used in the attacks, known in security circles as Aurora, has been in use for at least 18 months, Stamos said. But the security industry was unaware of Aurora until Google discovered the intrusion last December. That allowed hackers to get onto corporate networks undetected.

Other technology companies, including Intel, Adobe, and Symantec, have also been hit by the attack, which investigators have traced back to China.

To break into victim companies, the hackers sent carefully targeted e-mail or instant messages to victims, hoping to trick them into visiting Web pages or opening malicious documents that would then attack their computers.

The worst part of the attack is what happens once the initial victim has been compromised. The hackers then use a variety of techniques to acquire additional usernames and passwords and fan out across the targeted company's network, downloading sensitive data, which is then moved offshore.

This type of targeted attack is not new, but it is dangerous because it is so good at circumventing traditional security measures, said Rob Lee, a computer forensics instructor with the SANS Institute. "We've been dealing with [these attacks] for five years," he said. "They're basically going around all the security appliances via email."

Not all of these attacks have been linked to Aurora, but Lee said that "there have been hundreds of companies infiltrated."

Stamos agreed that traditional security products such as antivirus and intrusion detection systems are not enough to stop the attack. "The interesting thing to me about these attackers is they're very patient," he said. "They'll spend a lot of time writing custom malware to get around people's antivirus."

"They'll use a social network to learn about one person in the company, and then will send emails or chats messages as that person's friend," he added.

Microsoft wins Windows XP downgrade lawsuit

A federal judge has dismissed a year-old lawsuit against Microsoft Corp. over alleged antitrust violations for the "downgrade" rules it set for Windows Vista and XP.

The order issued Monday by U.S. District Court Judge Marsha Pechman put an end to the lawsuit filed by Emma Alvarado in February 2009. In her original complaint, the Los Angeles resident accused Microsoft of coercing computer makers into forcing consumers who wanted to run Windows XP to first buy Windows Vista, or later, Windows 7, before they were allowed to downgrade to XP.

"We're pleased the Court agreed that Plaintiff's complaint failed to state a viable claim and dismissed it in its entirety," Microsoft spokesman Kevin Kutz said in an e-mail.

Pechman rejected Alvarado's accusations, saying that the plaintiff had not proved Microsoft benefited from the downgrade practices that it created and that OEMs implemented.

"Nowhere does she allege that she paid to downgrade or that she did not receive a copy of Vista when she freely chose to purchase her new computer with that software," said Pechman. "That she chose to downgrade to XP without extra cost does not demonstrate that Microsoft retained a benefit without giving value. Nor does the fact that she chooses to use only one version nullify the fact that Microsoft gave her value for the bargain."

From Pechman's perspective, Alvarado got as much as Microsoft out of the deal. "If anything, it appears that Plaintiff obtained two versions of Microsoft's operating software for the price of one," she said.

Although Alvarado claimed that she had paid a $59.25 fee in mid-2008 to downgrade her new Lenovo laptop from Vista to XP, Microsoft denied it had profited. "Microsoft does not charge or receive any additional royalty if a customer exercises those [downgrade] rights," a Microsoft spokesman said last year.

Computer makers, not Microsoft, charged users the additional fees for downgrading a new PC from Vista to XP at the factory. However, Alvarado did not name Lenovo Group Ltd. in her lawsuit.

"Downgrade" describes the Windows licensing rights that Microsoft gives users, who are allowed under some circumstances to replace newer versions of Windows with an older edition without having to pay for another license. In effect, the license for the newer Windows is transferred to the older edition.

Microsoft's Windows downgrade policies came under fire long before Alvarado sued. In 2008, for example, Dell Inc. was accused of gouging customers to downgrade a new computer to XP.

Downgrading became popular in 2007 when users, unhappy with Vista's performance on the new PCs they bought, sought ways to run the leaner XP. Last year, Microsoft revealed that it would let users downgrade from Windows 7 to XP Professional until April 2011. Some computer manufacturers, including Dell, continue to offer factory downgrades from Windows 7 to XP.

How Buzz, Facebook and Twitter create 'social insecurity

An insurance expert told the Britain's Telegraph newspaper that using location-centric mobile social services like Google Buzz, Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare could raise your home insurance premiums, or even result in the denial of insurance claims.

Wait, what?A gag Web site launched this week called "Please Rob Me" raised an ugly but obvious truth about location-based mobile social networking: When you tell the public where you are, you're also telling burglars you're not at home. The site originally displayed a real-time stream of Twitter and Foursquare posts that might interest criminals.

Twitter has since pulled the plug, apparently, and now all Please Rob Me posts are from Foursquare. Each post begins with the user's name, followed by "left home and checked in" followed by an exact address of where the person is.

Insurance industry watchers like the one quoted by the Telegraph predict that after customers get burglarized and file claims on stolen property, the insurance companies will probably investigate to see whether the customer broadcast information over social networks in a way that constitutes "negligence." They could also make "social networker" the homeowners insurance equivalent of "chain smoker" in health insurance -- a category of customers who are charged higher premiums.

In my "Inside Google" blog yesterday, I wrote a detailed post titled "How to rob somebody using Google Buzz." My point was that even though Twitter and Foursquare can expose users to crimes, Google Buzz is even more compromising.

In a nutshell, using Google Buzz's mobile location feature, in combination with Google Profiles and other free Internet-based services, crooks can quickly find out who you are, where you are, what you look like, where you live, and when you'll be home. Scam artists can troll for suckers, then grab all the information they need for their scam.

This is bad news for Google in the wake of its already problematic Buzz rollout. When Buzz first hit, users were automatically "followed" to a list of people they e-mailed most often. Unless users were savvy enough to change the privacy settings on Google Profiles, which most Gmail users probably didn't even know existed, their lists of most-frequent contacts was made public. Doctors and lawyers had patients' and clients' identities revealed. Personal contacts were exposed to employers. Mistakes were made. Google apologized and fixed the problem, but not in time to stop a class-action lawsuit.

It's easy to pick on Google, because its services are so popular and because Buzz is so new. But the truth is that Buzz is just one small part of the new "social insecurity." We've innovated our way into a strange new world of privacy compromise and confusion.

Why you can't know how much privacy you have

We now live in a world of online services where privacy is often violated by default.

To understand this and do something about it, you need to be an exceptional person. The average user or consumer can't or won't figure out how to safeguard his privacy.

A minimal safeguarding on personal privacy nowadays requires users to take intelligent action regarding deeply buried, little discussed, often confusing and relatively obscure settings in Facebook, Gmail, Profiles, Twitter and a world of other online social services -- and most of all one's own cell phone.

Are your Facebook photos set up to be public or private? When you post pictures of your kids or spouse on Facebook, are those pictures made available on image search sites? Are creepy weirdos finding those pictures using Google, Bing or Yahoo image search and then reposting them on creepy weirdo Web sites?

When you post using Google's mobile Buzz app, are your tweets going to only the people following you, or the whole world?

Is your cell phone's GPS location feature on or off? If it's on, is any service, company or individual person able to get access to that data?

I'd be willing to bet that more than 90% of users can't answer those questions. But even the most skillful users often can't know how much privacy is being violated.

For example, we know that Google's computers read all of our e-mails every day. Special software scans the words we send and receive so Google can post ads next to the messages related to the conversations. Do Google employees ever read those e-mails, maybe as examples for research or marketing? How would we know if they did? And if we trust Google (and I do think Google is a trustworthy company), is the U.S. government reading your e-mail? How would we know if they did? And if you trust the U.S. government, is the Chinese government reading your e-mails? Hackers? Blackmailers? Your employer? How would we know if they did?

It's not that you don't know who's reading your e-mail. It's that you can't know. You will never know.

As Scott McNealy famously said 11 years ago: "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it." But it's not that simple anymore. He was talking more about concern over compromised privacy by companies and governments, which could potentially somehow use your private data for purposes you don't approve of. But now, thanks to social services that didn't exist when McNealy uttered his inconvenient truth, the whole privacy issue has exploded.

We still have to worry about governments and companies, but now we must be concerned about employers, criminals and even family members.

Here are five examples of the many weird new ways privacy can be violated.

1. Facebook photo tagging. You're a respectable citizen, a pillar of the community. You're active in the chamber of commerce, and local charity organizations. You're a senior officer in your company, and a church elder. Your kids think you're perfect. Then your old high-school buddy posts a picture of you vomiting shirtless at a debauched punk rave in the 80s with a cigarette in one hand, a bottle of Jack Daniels in the other and a purple mohawk on your head. He tags you, which puts that photo on your Facebook Wall. Now that photo has been shared with your mother, your kids, your boss, your colleagues. Once seen, it can't be unseen. If anyone copied the photo, it's now "out there." Forget about ever running for public office.

2. Google Buzz people harvesting. When you fire up Google Buzz on your iPhone, Android phone or -- soon enough, presumably -- any smartphone, and hit the "Nearby" button, you get a list of posts from strangers listed in order of which is closest. Their usernames can lead to their profiles, which probably enables contact via e-mail (like Craigslist, e-mail addresses can be private, but anyone can still send e-mail through Profiles). What's to stop any business from firing up Buzz every day and harvesting contacts of people who come to the neighborhood?

3. Street View evidence gathering. The chances that you personally will appear on Google Street View round to zero. The chances that a great many people will be exposed on Street View doing something embarrassing round to 100%. Thanks to social sharing, every transgression captured by a Google Street View van will be exposed, broadcast, shared and stored forever on hundreds or thousands or millions of hard disks across the world. If you're one of the lucky few caught doing something unpleasant on Street View, people you know will find out about it. And funny photos are forever.

4. Social group mixing. It's easy to forget who's following you. Facebook users often post compromising information. Somebody might, for example, report the he called in sick to go to the beach -- forgetting that his boss is one of his Facebook friends. Young people might have peers in mind when they post, and forget that mother is lurking. And on social networks like Twitter or Buzz, it's possible that people you know are following you under a pseudonym.

5. Set-it-and-forget-it sharing. New social services come along all the time. We sign up, try them, then forget about them when newer and shinier things come along. For example, Google came out with the Latitude location service a long time ago. Did you try it? If so, did you turn it off? Are you still trackable? The harsh reality is that most of us have no idea if we've left a trail of privacy-compromising services in our wake.

McNealy was right of course. Theoretically we have zero privacy. A motivated and skillful person or organization can always learn things about us that we'd rather keep to ourselves.

It's still a good idea to practice common sense when using the Internet. Don't blather information that could be useful to crooks. Be careful about what you share, and whom you share with. Take care in broadcasting your location, either manually or automatically. But even the most meticulous anti-social-networker can't really achieve true privacy.

The strange new reality of "social insecurity" is this: The best we can do is make the violation of our privacy a little less convenient for those who would exploit us.

Chinese school linked to Google attacks also linked to '01 attacks on White House site

One of two Chinese academic institutions identified in a New York Times report Thursday as the apparent source of the recent attacks against Google, has also been linked to a hacker who may have been involved with the takedown of whitehouse.gov in 2001.

The Times yesterday reported that the recent cyberattacks against Google and more than 30 other organizations appeared to have originated from computers at two schools in China. One of the schools was identified as the Shanghai Jiaotong University; the other, as the Lanxiang Vocational School, an academic institution in China's Shandong Province with apparent ties to the country's military.

A U.S. military contractor attacked in the same manner as Google, has even pointed investigators to a specific computer science class taught by a Ukrainian professor at the vocational school as one source of the attacks, the Times said.

The newspaper, quoting unnamed investigative sources, said the attacks on Google and more than 30 other technology companies appear to have begun in April -- much earlier than previously believed. If evidence of the schools' involvement bears out, it could cast doubt on the assumption that the Chinese government or military was directly involved in the attacks, the Times said.

The Shanghai Jiantong University is one of China's top academic institutions. Earlier this month, it won an international collegiate programming contest sponsored by IBM. The competition, entitled "Battle of the Brains," pitted students from 103 of the world's top universities in a software design challenge. As winners of the competition, students from Shanghai Jiantong University have a guaranteed offer of employment or internship with IBM, according to a statement from the company.

Jiantong University officials, speaking with the Times said they had not heard about the Google attacks being traced back to their computers but indicated a willingness to investigate. A professor at the school didn't rule out the possibility that the attacks came from the school, but said they might simply have been someone "experimenting with their hacking skills."

While the cyberattacks remain under investigation, Shanghai Jiaotong University has been linked with at least one leading Chinese hacker in recent years.

Scott Henderson, a former U.S. Army Intelligence officer who has written a book on Chinese hackers called Dark Visitor, has identified Peng Yinan as a one-time student at the school. Yinan is believed to have been involved in a series of DDoS attacks against whitehouse.gov nine years ago. That is the site for the White House.

According to Henderson's blog, Yinan used the online handles Coolswallow and Ericool and was a fairly active political hactivist during the spat between the U.S and Chinese governments in 2001 following a collision between a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft and a Chinese fighter jet.

A February 2009 story in Popular Science magazine based on interviews with Henderson, said that Yinan in September 2000 established a group at Shanghai Jiahnton University called Javaphile. The group, originally meant to be a forum for discussing physics and programming topics, turned to hacking amid the outrage over the plane collision, according to the Popular Science.

"On May 20, 2003, a man named Peng Yinan, then known only by the moniker coolswallow, logged into a public Shanghai Jiaotong University student forum and described how he formed a group at the university's Information Security Engineering School that coordinated with other hackers to bring down whitehouse.gov in 2001," the story said. The same individual also bragged about how his group had defaced other sites deemed to be anti-Chinese.

Over the next two years, Yinan and his accomplices allegedly broke into a Taiwanese firm's home page and defaced it with an obscenity opposing its pro-independence movement. Yinan also is alleged to have broken into a couple of U.S Navy Web sites and the Fox News Web site following the U.S invasion of Iraq in 2003, according to the magazine.

Henderson meanwhile has also linked Yinan to a Jiaotong University graduate student group called Beasts of Burden Society, for which he delivered an October 2007 lecture titled "Hacker in a Nutshell."

"According to the press release, Peng Yinan is a security information consultant for the Shanghai Public Security Bureau and a senior hacker," Henderson wrote in his blog. As recently as 2008, Yinyan was invited back to Jiaotong University to give a career talk to graduate students at the university's Information Security Engineering School, Henderson's blog notes.

There's nothing in either the Popular Science story or Henderson's blog to suggest that Jiaotong University was in any way directly or indirectly involved with Yinan's alleged activities -- or was even aware of them.

The Lanxiang vocational school, meanwhile, was described by the Times as a school that trains some computer scientists for the Chinese military and whose computer network is operated by a company with close ties to Google rival Baidu.

According to the Times, security analysts are divided over whether the schools are being used as a camouflage for government operations or were a cover for an intelligence operation run by someone else.

Speeding Up Windows' Menus

Want to make Windows' menus display more quickly? You can do this by enabling this Registry tweak that removes the slight delay that is normally present between clicking a menu and Windows displaying that menu.

To perform this tweak, follow these steps:

1. Open the Registry Editor.

2. Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop key.
3. Right-click the MenuShowDelay item and select Modify.
4. In the Edit String dialog box, change the current value (typically 400) to something a bit lower - something around 100 typically works well.
5. Click OK.

You can now close the Registry Editor and see how fast your menus open.

Caution: If you set the MenuShowDelay value too low, menus will open if you merely move your mouse over them. You need a value somewhere above 0; otherwise, it will make Windows difficult to use.

Disabling Low Disk Checking

Windows constantly checks to see whether there's enough free space on your hard drive. If there isn't, it displays a low disk space warning. The problem is, all this disk space checking uses a number of system resources, and you probably know if your disk space is low, anyway.

You can speed up your PC by turning off this low disk space checking. Here's how to do it:

Open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies key.
If the Explorer key exists, select it. If not, right-click in the rightmo st pane and select New, Key. Name this new key Explorer, and then select it.
Right-click in the rightmost pane and select New, DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Name the new DWORD NoLowDiskSpaceChecks.
Right-click the new NoLowDiskSpaceChecks item and select Modify.
In the Edit DWORD dialog box, change the value to 1.
Click OK.

Note: A DWORD is a special type of data value used for some Registry entries.

Moving the Windows Kernel into Memory

Anything that runs in system memory runs faster than if it runs from your hard disk. To that end, you can speed up Windows itself by moving the Windows kernel into RAM, by executing this Registry tweak:

Open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management key.
Right-click the DisablePagingExecutive item and select Modify.
In the Edit DWORD dialog box, change the value to 1.
Click OK.

You must reboot your system for this tweak to take effect.

Caution: If you experience system problems after performing this tweak, re-edit the value of DisablePagingExecutive back to 0.

Bonus Tip: Clean Up the Registry for Faster Performance

Editing Registry entries isn't the only way to use the Windows Registry to speed up Windows. That's because the Windows Registry itself can slow down your system 's performance
Let me tell you how.

Remember, the Registry holds the settings for every singleprogram and utility stored on your system. Over time, all the different programs you install and settings you configure create lots and lots and lots of entries in the Registry - even after you uninstall the programs or no longer need the settings. That's because Registry settings often aren't deleted when you remove a program from your PC; this contributes to Registry "bloat" with lots of unnecessary or orphaned entries.

So the more programs you install over time, the larger the Registry gets. And the larger the Registry is, in terms of both file size and number of entries, thlonger it takes for Windows to load it on startup - which slows down your system.

The fix for this problem is deceptively simple: Delete all the orphaned and unnecessary Registry entries. That's easier to say than to do, however. How do you know which entries are necessary and which aren't? Plus, do you really want to do all that work by hand, using the Registry Editor?

How Registry Cleaners Work

Fortunately, various third parties have recognized this issue and come up with their own solutions, in the form of Registry cleaner utilities. These programs automatically scour your Registry for redundant, invalid, or orphaned entries, and delete them. The process is easy as pie.

What kind of impact does a Registry cleaner actually have? It depends, to some degree, on how "clean" your Registry was to begin with. If cleaner finds only a dozen or so entries to delete (out of the thousands of valid entries), the performance impact is minimal. But if you have a greater number of useless entries (or a smaller number of total entries), a Registry cleaner will have a larger percentage impact on your system's performance. So you might notice a very small change in speed or a very large one, depending.

Caution: There is the slight chance that a poor-quality Registry cleaner pogram may incorrectly identify a working entry as an unnecessary one, and thus delete a setting that Windows needs to run. For that reason, you should set a rstore point (using System Restore) before cleaning your Registry. You can always go back to that precleaner restore point if your system has problems after the cleaning.

Google to offer 'ultra high-speed' broadband in US

Google is spreading its wings in yet another direction - this time as a network provider, offering super-fast broadband to thousands of US homes.

It plans to build a fibre-optic network offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second) to up to 500,000 homes.

It said it would compete on price with other broadband providers offering much slower speeds.

Google said the trial was about promoting killer apps that would take advantage of fast speeds.

Growing Google :

Google already has a fibre network which connects its data centres, speeds up search and lowers the cost of streaming video on YouTube.

Now it plans to take this to the next stage and connect that network directly to consumers' homes.

The network will be available for any service provider to use and Google is asking interested parties, from local government as well as members of the public, to sign up to the plan.

The offer is part of Google's expansion into controlling all aspects of a web user's experience.

In late 2009 Google offered a service called public DNS, which it said would speed up web browsing for users.

The domain name system is a series of databases that translate web addresses into computer readable numbers called IP addresses.

"The average Internet user ends up performing hundreds of DNS lookups each day, and some complex pages require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading," Google wrote in a blog at the time. "This can slow down the browsing experience."

DNS requests are usually handled by a person's Internet Service Provider (ISP).

In November 2009, the search giant also announced that it was working on a project to develop a faster version of http - which Google call SPDY - to speed up the transfer of content over the web.

At the time, the firm said its lab tests had shown that web pages loaded "up to 55% faster" using the protocol.

Broadband expansion :

The US, in common with countries around the world, is grappling with the best way to roll out next generation broadband.

In the first month of his office President Obama promised to spend $7.2bn on new broadband infrastructure.

The pot of money is available for smaller broadband providers and municipalities.

For Drew Clark, editor of US broadband comparison website BroadbandCensus, the impact of Google's entry into the broadband market will depend on how many homes the network serves.

"If it is 50,000 homes then that isn't a lot. But if it is 500,000 then that is a statement to say it is in the market place competing with the likes of Verizon," he said.

Verizon has made big investments in fibre networks, with plans to pass 18 million homes with its fibre-optic service by the end of the year.

Rival AT&T has 17 million households in its network but its fibre network does not run all the way to the home.

Google said it hopes its fibre network will act as a testbed for new applications.

Andrew Ferguson, editor of UK broadband website ThinkBroadband speculated as to what some of those killer apps could be.

"One idea would be to expand Google Streetview, so that you can play a movie of a route you wanted to take, so that when you are visiting a brand new area you will have a much better understanding of the area than is possible from simple static street view maps," he sai

"We planning to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States," the search giant said in its blog.

"We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. We'll deliver internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today," it continued.

Tracking Flights on Google Map - Real Time

The freely available Google Maps mashup enables developers to create real time web applications. An recent article at Labnol inspired me to research on real time flight tracking mashups available online.

Labnol described about a brilliant mashup that displays movement of incoming and outgoing flights from Amsterdam Airport called Casper (link ad suported)which can be configured for some select airports as well.

Below are some more Live Flight Tracking google map mashups. (all links are ad suported)

Gmaps Flight Tracker is a simple mashup which provides inbound flight information on several of the most popular airports in the U.S. including NY, Atlanta, Boston, etc. It works pretty well though it appears to only display flights relatively close to the arrival airport.

Air Traffic Zurich is mashup which shows on-line real-time air traffic over Switzerland and some more countries in Europe.

Flightradar24 which shows live aircraft traffic in the airspace above whole of Europe. Howver only aircrafts equipped with an ADS-B transponder are visible on the map.

Radarvirtuel covers contries like France, UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Cyprus, USA, Canada and Brazil.

A quick brief update on Apple's iPad

Three years after launching 'iPhone' Apple, the computing giant recently launched a new product. It's known as the 'iPad'.

iPad basically is a tablet computer, magazine sized touch screen that can do various tasks like surfing the web, watching movies, emailing, etc.. its like a bigger version of iPhone with more capabilities.

The Device ?
The device weighs just 1.5 pounds, compared with a few pounds for the typical laptop. At a mere half-inch thick, the iPad is also thinner than most laptops, including Apple's super-thin Macbook Air. With a maximum of 64GB of storage, the iPad can hold as many photos, movies and songs as most laptops.
The Pricing ?
The most basic iPad, with 16GB of flash memory, will be priced at $499. A 32GB version will cost $599 and a 64GB version will cost $699. The WiFi-only versions of the iPad will be available in the United States in March at Apple retail stores, the Apple web site and selected dealers. So other contries have to wait...

This sleek gadget aims to revolutionise the publishing business the same way as Apple iPod transformed the music industry and iPhone transformed the telecom industry.

How to know if a person is at invisible mode on Gtalk/Gmail

The invisible mode is one of the most used feature on Gtalk, this feature helps one to be invisible for others your contact list while you use the Gmail/Gtalk service.

Generally there is no way anyone could know if you are online if you set status to invisible mode, but there is a small simple trick though.

Below is a trick to know if a person is logged in at an invisible mode.

You just need to follow below 3 steps..

Step 1. You login to G talk/G mail chat as usual.

Step 2. Set the chat as 'off the record' with target user. This can be done by clicking on the inverted triangle button in chat window as follow.

Step 3. Now try sending chat to that target user when he is invisible or offline, you could say a 'hi'

-- If the target user is invisible, then he will receive your chat message.

But if the target user is not actually logged in then you would receive a alert message back ".... can't receive messages right now."

If you hack Google, Google will hack you back

This seems to be the message Google gave back to the Chinese hackers in the recent cyber attack. Recently when Google was attacked by a group of Chinese hackers it began a secret counteroffensive of breaking into the computers of the hackers and gathering evidence of the origin of these attacks and other relevant information.

Google's delta force found evidence that the hackers had attacked 33 other companies, like Adobe, Symantec., and that the onslaught actually came from Mainland China and not Taiwan. As per Google the evidence also suggest that a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists, however the hackers were not successful.

The sophistication of the these attacks strongly suggests support from Chinese government agencies. With this incident Google announced that it will no longer censor search results on Google.cn and they will maintain this stance, even if it ends in shutting down Google.cn.

Why did China Ban You tube ?

In most of China, YouTube has suddenly become inaccessible from 23rd March 2009. Google has confirmed thatYouTube once again is down in China, apparently a victim of Chinese censorship. China has a history of blocking websites which carry messages it views as politically unacceptable.

Some speculate that Chinese officials could be upset about footage of Chinese soldiers beating Tibetans appearing on the You Tube site.

Another possible reason for the blockade is the US Navy's recent release of videos depicting five Chinese ships apparently trying to snag a Sonar array cable trailing behind the USNS Impeccable, which appeared on You Tube.

China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) indicate that approximately 253 million people across China have access to the Internet re-enfourcing its internet supremacy.

The Chinese government in January began a crackdown of what the government calls “vulgar” websites. Under the crackdown, 91 sites were blocked in just three days. China warned Google and Chinese search engine Baidu that they needed to do more to censor “inappropriate content.”

The Beginning
Orkut was quietly launched on January 22, 2004 by Google, the search engine company. Orkut Buyukkokten, a Turkish software engineer, developed it as an independent project while working at Google (required by its policy). Some discomfort with this exists among users and potential users of orkut, especially since Google's other noteworthy product of 2004, the Web-based email client Gmail, had servers scan emails for keywords in order to deliver advertisements targeted at them, which sparked an idea that Google was "reading your email".

While previously working for Affinity Engines, he had developed a similar system, InCircle, intended for use by university alumni groups. In late June 2004, Affinity Engines filed suit against Google, claiming that Büyükkökten and Google based orkut on inCircle code. The allegation is based on the presence of 9 identical bugs in orkut that also exist in InCircle. Originally, the orkut community was felt to be elite, because its membership is by invitation only. Orkut's use as a social tool is complex, because various people frequently try to add strangers to their own pool of friends, more often than not just to increase the number indicating their number of friends next to their name in their profile. Many "add-me" communities exist, solely for this purpose. A large number of bogus, cloned, fake, invisible and "orphaned" profiles also exist.

Speed and reliability
As of September 2006, orkut often is unavailable, producing a "Bad, bad server. " error message — behavior consistent with that of an underpowered server under heavy load. The outages tend to occur during the day hours in the Americas, home of more than 80% of orkut users.

Iranian censorship

Orkut was very popular in Iran, but the website is blocked by the government. As they say, this is due to national security issues, as orkut users have the ability to spread messages rapidly, but the government says it's due to Islamic ethical issues about dating and match making. To get around this block, sites such as "orkutproxy.xom" (now defunct) were made for Iranian users. Other websites such as Groups likw Yahoo, Google have communities dedicated to receiving updates on the newest location of Iran's orkut proxy. Though it was once possible to bypass governmental blockage of orkut, the site has closed its HTTPS pages on all anonymous proxies. Now it is almost impossible for ordinary users to visit this site inside Iran.

In August 2006 UAE followed the footsteps of Iran in blocking the site.
